What to do immediately after overheating?
If your car starts overheating, treat it like an urgent safety issue. Acting quickly and in the right order can help prevent engine damage and reduce the risk of burns from hot coolant or steam.
1) Turn off the A/C and turn on the heater
Shut off the air conditioning immediately. Then set the heater to the hottest setting and turn the fan up. This pulls heat away from the engine and can buy you time to get to a safe place to stop.
2) Watch the temperature gauge and find a safe place to pull over
As soon as you can, move out of traffic and pull over safely. If the gauge is climbing rapidly, you see steam, or warning lights appear, don’t try to “make it home.” Stopping sooner is usually safer for the engine.
3) Turn the engine off and let it cool
Once stopped, shift into Park, set the parking brake, and shut the engine off. Open the hood if it’s safe to do so, but keep your face and hands away from any steam. Allow the vehicle to cool down before attempting anything else.
4) Do not open the radiator cap while hot
Never remove the radiator cap on an overheated engine. The cooling system is pressurized, and hot coolant can spray out and cause severe burns. Wait until the engine has cooled significantly before checking anything under pressure.
5) Check coolant level only after cooling (and add the right fluid)
After the engine cools, check the coolant reservoir level. If it’s low, top it off with the manufacturer-recommended coolant (or water in an emergency, then correct it later). If you see active leaking, a broken hose, or the reservoir is empty again quickly, avoid driving and call for help.
6) Decide whether to drive or call for a tow
If the temperature returns to normal after cooling and topping off, and there are no leaks or warning signs, you may be able to drive a short distance to a repair shop while monitoring the gauge closely. If it overheats again, stop and arrange a tow.

FAQ
Can you drive a car that overheated?
You can sometimes drive it only after it cools down and the temperature stays normal, with no signs of leaks or warning lights. If it overheats again or coolant is rapidly disappearing, stop driving and get a tow to prevent engine damage.
